If there is one thing every Muslim child and every new Muslim should know before anything else, it is the Kalimas. These six short but profound statements of faith are the foundation that Islam builds on. They express who Allah is, what Muslims believe about the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, the oneness of Allah, and the path of repentance and purity. Every single word in each Kalima carries weight that a lifetime of reflection cannot exhaust. The 6 Kalimas are six essential Islamic beliefs that serve as a foundation of faith for Muslims worldwide. At Online Quran Learners, we offer a comprehensive course that explores the meaning and significance of each Kalima. Our expert tutors guide students through all six statements of faith with clarity and understanding, helping them to deepen their connection with Allah (SWT) and strengthen the roots of their Islamic identity.
Whether you are enrolling a young child for the very first time, beginning your ownIslamic journey as an adult, or embracing Islam as a new Muslim who wants to startfrom the right place, this course gives you exactly what you need. Each Kalima is taughtlive, one to one, with correct Arabic pronunciation, complete transliteration, and a clearexplanation of its meaning in simple English.
The word Kalima in Arabic means word or statement. In Islamic tradition, the six Kalimas are a set of declarations that encapsulate the most essential beliefs of a Muslim. They are not simply prayers or recitations. They are affirmations of faith that a Muslim carries in their heart throughout their entire life.
The first Kalima, the Shahadah, is the declaration that a person becomes Muslim by saying. It is recited at birth into a child’s ear, said when a person accepts Islam, recited throughout life, and is the last statement a Muslim hopes to say before death. The other five Kalimas build on this foundation, each adding a dimension of belief, glorification, purity, or repentance.
For children especially, learning the 6 Kalimas early creates a foundation that everything else in their Islamic education rests on. A child who knows and understands the Kalimas
understands, at its simplest level, what Islam is and what it means to be a Muslim. That clarity stays with them for life.
Learn the Six Kalimas with correct pronunciation and clear understanding of their meanings. Strengthen your basic Islamic beliefs and build a strong foundation of faith. This course helps students memorize and practice these essential declarations in daily life with confidence.
The 6 Kalimas course is structured so that students learn each Kalima completely before moving to the next one. No Kalima is treated as just a recitation to memorize and move on from. Each one is a statement a Muslim should understand deeply and carry with genuine meaning.
Each Kalima is taught letter by letter, then word by word, until the student can recite it as a smooth, natura lflow with accurate Arabic pronunciation.
Students who cannot yet read Arabic script learn using phonetic transliteration so they can read each Kalima in their own alphabet while they build Arabic reading skills alongside.
The teacher breaks down each Kalima word by word, explaining what every phrase means in plain, simple language that children and adults can both understand and relate to.
Beyond the words, students learn why each Kalima matters, when it is recited, and what it reflects about Islamic belief. This understanding makes memorization more meaningful and more durable.
Children learn through repetition, rhythm, and encouragement. Adults learn through understanding and structured review. Your teacher adapts the memorization approach to what works best for you.
The Kalimas contain Arabic letters that do not exist in English, such as Ain, Ghain, and the heavy forms of Sad and Dad. Your teacher specifically addresses these sounds so they are produced correctly.
Here are all six Kalimas as they will be taught in this course, each with the correct Arabic text, phonetic transliteration for easy reading, and a clear explanation of what each one means.
Transliteration: Laa ilaaha illallaahu Muhammadur rasoolullaah
Meaning: There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Explanation: This is the Shahadah, the declaration of Islamic faith. It is the most important statement in Islam. A person becomes a Muslim by saying this with sincere belief. It affirms the absolute Oneness of Allah and the prophethood of Muhammad, peace be upon him.
Transliteration: Ash-hadu allaa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluh
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Explanation: The second Kalima expands the Shahadah into a formal testimony. It explicitly states that Allah has no partner and confirms the relationship of the Prophet, peace be upon him, as both a servant and a Messenger of Allah.
Transliteration: Subhaanallaahi walhamdu lillaahi wa laa ilaaha illallaahu wallaahu akbar. Wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata illaa billaahil aliyyil azeem
Meaning: Glory be to Allah. All praise be to Allah. There is no god except Allah. Allah is the Greatest. There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.
Explanation: This Kalima combines four of the most powerful phrases in Islam: Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, and Allahu Akbar. It is a statement of complete glorification of Allah, acknowledging His perfection, majesty, and the believer’s total dependence on Him.
Transliteration: Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamootu abadan abadan dhul jalaali wal ikraam. Biyadihil khair. Wa huwa alaa kulli shay-in qadeer
Meaning: There is no god except Allah, alone without partner. His is the Kingdom and His is all praise. He gives life and causes death. He is ever living and will never die. In His hands is all goodness, and He has power over all things.
Explanation: The fourth Kalima is a deeper declaration of Tawheed — the absolute Oneness and sovereignty of Allah. It describes His eternal nature, His power over life and death, and the fact that all goodness rests in His hands alone.
Transliteration: Astaghfirullaaha rabbi min kulli dhambin adhnabtuhu amadan aw khata-an sirran aw alaaniyatan wa atoobu ilayhi min adh-dhambi alladhee aalamu wa min adh-dhambi alladhee laa aalamu
Meaning: I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin I have committed deliberately or by mistake, secretly or openly. I repent to Him from the sin I know and the sin I do not know.
Explanation: This Kalima is a comprehensive supplication of repentance and seeking forgiveness. It acknowledges human fallibility in the most honest way, covering sins committed deliberately, accidentally, in public, and in private. It is a statement of complete humility before Allah.
Transliteration: Allahumma inni a’oozu bika min an ushrika bika shai’an wa ana a’lamu bihi, wa astaghfiruka limaa laa a’lamu bihi, tubtu ‘anhu wa tabarra’tu minal kufri wash-shirki wal-kazibi wal-gheebati wal-bid’ati wan-nameemati wal-fawaahishi wal-buhtaani wal-ma’aasi kullihaa, wa aslamtu wa aqoolu laa ilaaha illallaahu Muhammadur Rasoolullaah.
Meaning: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating partners with You. I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know. I repent from it and I declare myself free of every religion that opposes Islam.
Explanation: The sixth Kalima is a declaration of seeking refuge from Shirk — associating partners with Allah —which is the gravest sin in Islam. It is a statement of total commitment to Tawheed and complete rejection of any belief that contradicts the Oneness of Allah.

This course requires no prior knowledge of Arabic or Islam. It is one of the most accessible entry points into Islamic education, suitable for the very youngest learners and the most recent converts alike.
The 6 Kalimas are typically the first structured Islamic knowledge a Muslim child receives. Learning them young, with correct pronunciation and genuine understanding, gives children a foundation that their entire Islamic education builds on. Our teachers are patient, encouraging, and experienced with young learners.
If you have recently accepted Islam, the 6 Kalimas are the perfect starting point. They tell you exactly what Islam stands for in the most concise form possible. Our teachers are especially supportive and patient with new Muslims, understanding that everything is new and that there is no such thing as a question too basic to ask.
Many adult Muslims recite some of the Kalimas with errors they have never had corrected, or know only the first Kalima well and have a limited grasp of the others. This course covers all six thoroughly and respectfully, at a pace suited to adult learners.
Some parents use this course to learn the Kalimas properly themselves so they can reinforce what their child is learning between sessions. Family learning is something we actively support and can accommodate with flexible scheduling.
Learn, understand, and memorize the 6 Kalimas step by step with expert guidance, helping you strengthen your faith and daily Islamic practice.
Every session is private and conducted live. Your teacher works only with you or your child. They hear every word recited, correct every error immediately, and pace the lesson around the student's actual progress that day. There are no group classes and no pre-recorded videos.
All our teachers are certified in Quran recitation and Islamic studies. They have extensive experience teaching beginners of all ages and know how to make the 6 Kalimas memorable rather than mechanical. Our expert tutors guide students with clarity and genuine care for their learning.
Both male and female certified teachers are available for this course. Families who prefer a female teacher for their daughter or for sisters can request one at registration. All teachers are qualified in Islamic education.
Classes are available seven days a week across all time zones including the USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. Morning, evening, and weekend slots are all available. You choose the time that works for your family, and we will be there for it.
Classes are conducted via secure video call and can be joined from a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. No technical skills are needed. If you can make a video call, you can join a class. The platform is simple, stable, and easy to use for students of all ages.
Young children learn through gentle repetition, call and response, and the natural rhythm of the Kalimas. Adults learn through understanding first and repetition second. Your teacher uses whatever approach produces the best retention for you specifically, not a one-size-fits-all method.
There are plenty of websites that list the 6 Kalimas. What none of them can do is listen to your child recite the second Kalima, hear that they are mispronouncing one letter, and gently correct it in the moment. That is the difference between reading a page and learning from a teacher.
Written text and audio recordings cannot hear your child and tell them whether they are right or wrong. A live teacher can, and does, every single class.
A child who memorizes the Kalimas without understanding them
has learned sounds. A child who understands them has built a foundation. We always teach both together.
Students who know the 6 Kalimas properly are ready for the
Prayer Method course, daily duas, and broader Islamic Studies. These six statements open the door to a complete Islamic education.
No travel, no scheduling conflicts with school or work. Classes
happen at a time that suits your family, from the comfort of your home, with the quality of a real teacher.
Our teachers celebrate effort and progress at every session. Children leave classes feeling capable and motivated, not overwhelmed or rushed.
Families in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Gambia, and beyond have chosen Online Quran Learners to give their children a proper Islamic foundation. The trust they place in us is something we honor in every session.
Three free trial classes allow you to see the teaching style, meet your teacher, and watch your child’s first session before making any commitment or payment.
Clear, transparent pricing with family packages available. Islamic education for your children should never be a source of financial stress.
Completing the 6 Kalimas course is one of the most foundational achievements in a young Muslim’s Islamic education. Here is what it looks like when a student finishes:
• All 6 Kalimas memorized from heart: The student can recite all six Kalimas
from memory without prompting, in the correct order, with smooth and confident
delivery.
• Correct Arabic pronunciation throughout: Every Kalima has been heard and verified by a certified teacher. The student is not guessing or repeating errors passed down informally. Their pronunciation is accurate and will remain so.
• Full understanding of what each Kalima means: The student can explain in simple English what each Kalima declares. They understand that the first Kalima is the declaration of faith, that the fifth is about seeking forgiveness, and what
each one adds to their understanding of Islam.
• Confidence to recite in Salah and in life: The student recites the Kalimas with the kind of confidence that comes from truly knowing something, not just having memorized it. That confidence carries into their Salah and into their daily Islamic identity.
• A clear Islamic identity from an early age: A child who knows and understands the 6 Kalimas knows what they believe and who they are as a Muslim. That clarity is one of the most important gifts Islamic education can give.
• Readiness for the next step in Islamic learning: Students who complete this course are well prepared to begin the Prayer Method course, Daily Supplications,
or Islamic Studies, having already built the foundational beliefs that all of those courses build upon.
The 6 Kalimas are the first thing a Muslim child should know by heart. They are the declarations of faith, the words that define what a Muslim believes. Our course makes learning them simple, enjoyable, and meaningful, with a real teacher in every session.
